5 Reasons to Move the Furniture Around in Your Home

Did you ever wonder what it’s like to be on a professional design show?
You know the ones where they make over an entire space within 48 hours or less?
Don’t you watch those and think
I can do that to my house, no problem!
Last Friday I switched around our bedroom furniture while Dan was at work. I LOVE the element of surprise, not to mention having a little fun for no reason at all other than I was bored with the previous layout. I call it my very own makeover madness, except I don’t have a crew of helpers and there’s no camera people around, thank goodness.
Moving around furniture, art, rugs, and accessories can be great therapy, among other positive benefits. Here’s why it’s a fun idea to move around the furniture in your home.
1. It’s Free
There’s no home improvement like FREE home improvement. Am I right? Switching up the decor costs no money and it can be done in a short amount of time. I’m up for a new look for zero $$$ any day.
Call a friend or open up a bottle of wine on a Tuesday night and get moving. {I’m only half kidding about the wine *wink*}.
2. It will Give You a New Perspective
And when I say this, I mean on a lot of things. The days after I switched up our bedroom I FELT different. I can’t explain it, it just was. The reason why so many of us love to decorate and create beautiful spaces is because it makes you FEEL a certain way. Switching up a room’s layout or swapping out rugs or curtains can make your feel better, happier, have a new spring in your step and a whole bunch of positive emotions. Try it and you’ll see.
3. It Will Help You Clear Out the Clutter
This is a HUGE benefit of rearranging. The minute you start to do it, you’ll need to move things out of the way. Clothes, magazines laying around, laundry, whatever. And the minute you start piling all your stuff up in one place is the minute you’ll realize you have too much stuff. Do yourself and your mind a favor and make a {few} bags for Goodwill and reap the benefits of reason #2 above….you’ll feel better when you unload.
4. It Will Help You Organize
We switched a set of bookshelves and a cabinet from our living room into our dining room once and it gave us a solid place to set up a home bar. All the glassware, bottles and accessories when into the bar cabinet and out of the random places they had been stored. Organization accomplished.
My best organization advice is to store like items together. Socks don’t belong with the knives and paperclips don’t go with the sheet sets. You get what I mean. Set up a place for your things in your new arrangement and give away the rest that you don’t use or don’t fit.
5. It Will Create a Cleaner Home
Of course by moving the bed to the other side of the room will force me to clean the floor under it. A task I rarely do. Promise me when you do switch things up you’ll clean as you put them in their new location? So while you’re preparing, keep a broom, dust cloth and some cleaner nearby too.
You’ll have so much fun you’ll forget you are actually cleaning in the process.
Hi Jessica!
I love to read your blogs! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. About this theme, this is something I do once or twice a year. It gets very hectic in my house while I am doing it, but the final product gives a different vibe to the rooms. Plus it is my time to deep clean the whole house.
Hi Maria,
Great to hear that you like to move your furniture around too 🙂 I need to do more deep cleaning also!
Absolutely. When I was a kid my momand Aunts would have rearranging parties. It was so much fun. Chatting, singing and dancing while we helped reorganize and decorate a space. Honestly we di not do it enough these days. Glad to see you feel the same way.
Hi Marsha,
Rearranging parties sound like a lot of fun! Maybe I will have to schedule some of those with friends, I normally just move the furniture when my husband is out! Thanks so much for reading my blog 🙂
I change up my furniture and decor ALOT due to suffering from Depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder and just plain bored with the look. I usually do it while he is still sleeping *wink*.

But in one trip to the Dollar Tree I found a new look with bright cheerful colors (Royal Blue, Orange and Lime green) I and my hubby like. Started with 3 placemats that I put on the wall and some butterfly wall clings and 3 brass butterflies.

We live in such a tiny apartment. Our kitchen table is really too big for our kitchen it seats 6 normally, but, hey, I got it for $40.00. We have had it for 12 years now. I would love to get my hands on a nice Bistro Set from Target with cushions.
