Even though we're in a new year, I'm still working on putting the dining room…
Bookshelves Makeover + A Dining Room Update
One of the bad things about traveling around the globe is the jet lag that has you falling asleep at 4:00 in the afternoon. But one of the good things is sometimes you are wide awake at 7:30am ~ like I am right now! And what better thing to do than show you a furniture makeover in the dining room right?
Now I know you have all seen this mini bookshelf makeover on my new Facebook cover photo, but now you get the details.
In addition to the many many things we’ve been doing in the dining room, I came across these little shelves to add to the one wall. They weren’t originally part of the plan, but you know how that goes.
Enter the dirty wood-colored before.ย It was 30% off furniture day at the thrift store when I spotted these so I got them for a low $7. I liked the little rounded leg and I needed some storage for my dishes.
And since I wanted the shelves to be durable, not to mention I had to cover the dark wood, I pulled out the trusty Rust Oleum Cover Stain Primer-Sealer after a quick sanding.
Two coats of different colored paint later, one for the inside and one for the outside and viola! A bookshelf makeover.
I used the Benjamin Moore Advance white on the outside. This is now my go-to white furniture paint. It dries wonderfully and is a beautiful bright white.
The inside of the shelves got a coat of the grey that I used for the kitchen, which is Chinchilla by Martha Stewart.ย I wanted my white dishes to stand out on the shelves.
Some of the chargers are chalkboard {have you ever painted any chalkboard chargers, it’s fun} and the soup tureen I picked up for $8 while out thrifting one day, can you believe it? The 16 white plates are Mikasa restaurant ware that I got at a dish factory sale. I love them. They are my entertaining and everyday plates. Nice, simple, white plates ~ perfect.
Here was the spoiler shot. The shelves are in a corner in the space, in front of the pocket doors between the living and dining rooms. Our old house has all kinds of neat things like pocket doors, which we actually use.
For the top I got a lamp and horse from HomeGoods. HG always comes through when you need an accessory or four ๐ Speaking of, my local store has doubled in size, yahoo.
Now don’t go to HG looking for a blue horse because he doesn’t exist. The horse used to look like this.
He got a little Rust-Oleum’s Night Tide which I have used many times before to brighten him up for his dining room debut. I love my horse! Carmel would be proud ๐
And just like that, another piece of the dining room has come together.

I got your first above I thought you lost $7 but after getting the great makeover, I was stunt. I love the color for horse sculpture and the color combination is really cool for above piece.
I’m a new visitor to your site and love this makeover. Also, glad to see that you have not painted out the woodwork. Nice to see a home with the original dark brown wood and which is not like every other house with white trim.
Love your individuality and I’ll be returning to your blog for other great ideas and to enjoy pics of your beautiful home.
Hi Monique,
Thanks so much for your sweet comment and for visiting my blog. I wrote about the wood trim in a post here if you are interested: http://decoradventures.com/2012/09/why-ill-never-paint-our-wood-trim.html
Hope you have a nice week ๐
Hi Jessica
A friend of mine recommended that I check out your site. After retiring from the hussle of city life we purchased a little country home in the rurals. I have been at a loss for how to decorate and not loose its country charm inside and out. Well I think I have found my resource – YOU! Love your dining room makeover and the blue and white. I will be catching up on your blogs. Keep’em coming!
Hi Mary,
Thanks for leaving a comment! Glad I could be an inspiration. You will have a great time decorating your house, it’s a lot of fun. Come visit again soon and happy holidays!
