One place I always forget to decorate for the holidays is on my walls. Sure…
DIY Fall Wall Art
Happy fall! Like many of you this is also my favorite season for so many reasons. The crisp air and cozy sweaters to ward them off. The pumpkin spiced everything and warm holiday seasons ahead. I feel like I haven’t created much of anything lately, but got a chance to put together this DIY Fall Wall Art for our foyer that I’m absolutely loving.
Today I’m happily participating in the Festival of Fall, where each day this week we have recipes, crafts and tours to show you. So you can get all of your fall decorating and seasonal inspirations right here.
I made this art all from supplies I had on hand, it was completely free, which I love! I started a new category on here called ‘Free’ because I’ve realized I have so many supplies in my craft closet, I’d love to see what I can make with them. Here is how to put together your own wall art.
Supplies
- 1/4″ pine underlayment
- 3′ of 1″x2″ pine or MDF
- Gorilla glue + water
- Paint + paint brush
- Hanging hardware
- Felt
- Glitter + glitter glue
- Scissors + Feather pattern
- Double sided tape
Instructions
Pine underlayment can be found at the home improvement store. It comes in large and smaller sheets, usually 4’x8′ or 4’x4′ and you can have the employees cut it for you. We used this for our basement bathroom plank wall and had the ends leftover, so I used those pieces which were 30 inches long x 8 inches wide.
The good thing about this is that you can have the pieces cut any size you’d like and then piece them together to fit above a fireplace, or bed or just on a wall.
To secure the pieces together, cut two pieces of 1×2 wood and Gorilla glue it to the back of the planks as they are lined up together. I used weights to hold the 1×2 pieces of MDF down on the back while the glue dried.
For the front of the piece you can leave it as the wood color it is, or paint or stain it. I used 1 part of light gray paint mixed with 2 parts water to white/gray wash the wood. First practice on the back, like I did to make sure you get the color you want. I used 3 light coats of the watered down paint to “stain” the front.
I plan to use this as an interchangeable background for seasonal art. For the fall I decided to make felt feathers. Do do this, get some stiff felt from the craft store and using a template either cut out or just visually, cut your own feather shapes. I made 5 since I thought that would fit the size of the planks I made.
I traced the edges with glitter glue and then sprinkled on gold glitter because, well everything is better with more glitter right? {Husband, don’t answer that one.}
Using double sided tape to secure them to the planks makes them easily removeable and then changeable for the upcoming seasons if I decide to keep the art up. Secure hanging hardware on the back, I used picture wire, and you are all set!
I love how the colors came out, it’s just how I pictured. This is the first change I made to this wall since I painted it in hale navy a few months ago.
Now the question is, what should I put on it for Thanksgiving and Christmas?
