Happy Labor Day friend. I hope you got to relax this weekend. Saturday was my…
Dollar Store Decor + How to Make Hurricane Candle Holders
Here is an idea for dollar store decor and something easy you can make for only $2!
Well I’m a total copycat. I’ve completely ripped off this idea and I fully admit it. How to make hurricane candle holders. You’ve probably seen them around at Sarah’s who saw them at Emily’s. Or perhaps you caught them by Robin or Melissa. See how that works? We’re one big crafty blogging family 🙂
This infamous total-cost-is-two-smackers project that will add some serious glamor to your space. We’re talking $50 glamor, because that’s how much the other versions cost at some of the stores you might be familiar with. After seeing these across the blog-o-sphere, I had a sudden urge to run out and get the supplies to make them. There’s only 3 items you need to make hurricane candle holders, or more depending on how many you want to make.
Let me get right to it – How to make hurricane candle holders, also know as dollar store decor! My supplies are dollar store candle sticks and glass hurricanes. $1 each friends, it can’t get any cheaper.
Plus some sort of glue. Some people use hot, some use guerrilla glue, I used Liquid Nails Clear Small Projects Silicone Adhesive (affiliate link).
After I washed and dried each piece I glued the pillar holders onto the bottom of the hurricanes. You can turn them upside down or keep them right side up, however you like, but let them dry overnight. This is important if you use the liquid nails. I’m not sure about the other adhesives, but the nails needed overnight drying time.
Don’t even try to test them 20 minutes later, they will still be wet and will move, so let them sit. But the next day you’ll have fabulous $2 hurricanes.
My fiance didn’t know what a hurricane was, I had to explain 🙂 But he loves them, I got a high five. His exact words were “$2? You saw that on a blog didn’t you? Keep reading blogs.” Of course!
I put in some rocks from an ocean beach and Spanish moss for a little fall touch, then an ivory 3×6 pillar candle.
I frequently move these all around the house. They are great for on the mantel or in the dining room. If you like these and make them, let me know. I’d love to see what you fill them with. Happy hurricaning {that’s not a word right}, but trust me, go out and get yourself some of these to make. You’ll be happy you did 🙂
Here are some other photos of the candle holders.

Have you done any craft projects from the dollar store?
Here’s some projects you might also enjoy:
These are gorgeous!!! I never would have thought you got them from the dollar store…but that makes them even better!
I made 130 of these for my daughters wedding. I used different size candles holders to make differt sizes. They were so cute. 3 other people have used them for weddings and anniversaries before I sold them. Every bride, mother of bride and groom has kept a set of three.
Barb, that is amazing! Glad you found these and that they helped make your daughter’s wedding so special. They are such a versatile item! Thanks for reading my blog :-).
Wow, that must have shaved a fortune off the cost of your daughter’s wedding. Bless your heart! 🙂
I LOVE them and love what you did with them!! I still need to glue mine — isn’t that funny? 🙂 They are still precariously perched on the candlesticks.
cute!!! way to go 🙂
i say paint that sucker white. never fails!
What rock have I been under? How come I’ve never stumbled across your blog before? You have some great stuff. Rip off or not, those hurricanes are terrific! I’m off to browse a few more of your posts.
Thanks for visiting today too.

Yes! I saw Sara’s post about this and went to the Dollar Store and bought some too! I just need to plan where I’m going to put them when I’m finished.
And I really like your blog – great job!
Those are fabulous!
Love how you decorated the hurricanes! I’d say leave the dresser the way it is…but if you change your mind, paint it black.
We are so glad you shared your great project with us at Anything Related! They look fabulous!

Sand the dresser down to original wood and paint lacquer down to protect it. Bare wood is in now.
So sad dollar store dosent have vases with curved tops any more . I. Stumbled on your blog and then some things started to look fimiluar to me , I’m from Depew . So it’s nice to see you here.
You make me want to go to my local dollar store and just buy things. LOL, but that’s a good thing. ^_^ I love these!
I would refinish the dresser…it may be work intensive, but the results will be soooo worth it…EVERYONE seems to cop out and paint or do shabby chic white…fine wood is a beauty to the eye, and will draw lots of compliments.
These look perfect for holiday gifts. They’re beautiful. I already have candle holders to use for the bases. It may be time for a thrift shop run for the hurricane part.
Thanks for posting this article. I just linked to it from my blog. The post will be up tomorrow.
I made two of these for a family member for Christmas… They never guessed I hardly spent any money on them. Perfect classy gift on a college-student budget!
Really gorgeous…such neat arrangement of the moss..
Hello. I love these and have been making them. I also put photos of the kids in side the hurricane so it is a collage of them. Since I have photos, I splurge and get the candles that are battery operated.
Hi Ruth,
Great idea with the photos and the battery candles, they make things so easy. I just used more vases today to make striped one. Love the dollar store!
Wow, what a lovely diy. But the way you styled yours is so beautiful, and the glue… I just wouldn’t have known what glue to use either. I want to buy a beach house and copy yours exactly! Thanks so much for sharing! :o)
I just noticed that my comments to this post yesterday were not approved/posted. Was there a problem? Would appreciate a response.
