Hello and happy fall y'all! Temps got a little bit cooler here this past weekend…
Fall Garland with Wooden Fruit
Picture this. One day you get to go to the thrift store and pick out some fun items. Items with potential. Items you can makeover.
But you don’t actually get to turn the trash into treasure yourself. You have to send it off to a stranger. And they get to figure out what to do with the stuff you scored.
Things don’t end there. You also get items from a friend and can have your own makeover party.
Think it sounds crazy? We call it Swap It Like It’s Hot. Us bloggers can get a little too excited about a DIY project and we’re back with the 4th edition of Swap It.
A shipment to my house that I didn’t pay for? A chance to use my spray paint stash? The mystery of how it will turn out? Count me in!
My other projects in previous Swap It versions were painted plate holders that I turned into wall art, two serving trays, and a pool rack turned into a baby mobile.
This time around I got 3 fabulous items from Lesley at Chaotically Creative. She has some thrift store skills. I received a 2-sided light that had 2 price stickers on it. One from what looked like a yard sale for $2 and the other from Goodwill for $5.99. Oh the inflation!
Next there was a bag of wooden fruit straight from the 70’s I’m sure. And I got a letter holder that rotates. Pretty cute.
I have plans for all these items but want to show the fruit first, it was the funniest of the three, how could I not try to make it over.
I drilled a pilot hole in each and inserted a cup hook. Then they got a quick coat of spray paint and up on the mantel then went. The pine cone garland I made last year needed a little pep, so up went the fruit.
This is actually a new look for this mantel. I painted the top black and the firebox white to simplify the look. Plus now it created a neutral background for any fall and holiday decorations. I loved the navy accent wall, but was feeling like I had to use blue in the space otherwise and I don’t want to always be tied to one specific color.
I sent these items to Ursula at Home Made by Carmona, and was praying she would find them useful for Swap It because Urlsua has amazing style and creativity. A tray, a vase and some picture holders. I think they have potential! Go see her makeover here.
Now, golden apple anyone? Yes, it’s made of wood 🙂
Tune in all week to see the crazy items this talented group of bloggers has been making over! Search the hashtag #swapitlikeitshot on social media to follow along with all the fun or check out our Pinterest Board.

Love that idea! I’m sure you’ll find lots of things to do with them beside hanging on a garland also! Great makeovers as always!!
Ha so clever! And it’s actually cute! XO
I LOVE the fruit-and-pinecone garland idea! How fun is that!?

Nancy
Wow! Your got some hard items to work with girl! Great job!
that was the perfect use of wooden fruit!
Ha!! A few years ago I bought a bowl of the same wooden fruit and did some DIY magic on it 🙂 Great minds think alike! http://www.queenofeverything.net/2014/04/27/thrift-shop-wooden-fruit-bowl/
Well I was anxious to see what would be done with the wooden fruit and you did a great job! Love your garland!
Ahhh, love me some gold fruit! The gold look beautiful with your dramatic black and white fireplace. Great job!
I, too, had some 70’s fruit to makeover. I really like your version- that gold + black = SWOOON! Such a relief to see an elegant color combo, you know, besides the browns and oranges for fall.
How cool! I love what you did. I’m kind of jealous of everyone’s wooden fruit! I hope I find some in a thrift store one day! 😀
Such a great idea incorporating them into your garland! Love it!
