The Best Home Depot DIY Workshop Ever!
Disclosure: Post sponsored by The Home Depot, but all opinions are my own. Please see below for additional disclosure.
Get excited because you are going to see 3 amazing things in this post about my recent Home Depot DIY Workshop:
- How to set up an entire lumber aisle to accommodate 80 DIYers
- How much fun you can have learning new skills at a Home Depot near you and,
- What my 37 week baby belly looks like in the orange apron. Are you ready?!
This past Saturday I got to partner with Home Depot and present at one of their DIY workshops at a local store. This workshop was about how to make an outdoor lighted yard tree, perfect for your holiday decorating this time of year. Home Depot offers all types of FREE workshops for kids, women and anyone who want to come learn various home improvement skills like gardening, deck staining, and unique functional projects for both inside and outside your home. They are a great way to learn new things and meet new people.
When I arrived the store early in the morning, I got to meet Lyn, the store manager, and her amazing team of associates who LOVE putting on workshops for people just like you. And I got an amazing orange apron of my own! Thankfully it did fit around the belly 🙂
Imagine my surprise when they told me there were 80 people signed up to attend the workshop! So they had to set up an entire lumber aisle for everyone to have space.
If you’ve never attended a workshop at Home Depot, it’s very easy and you can feel right at home. Depending on what type you attend, they provide everything for you to get hands on and demonstrations of how to use tools and materials. Things were set up so attendees had easy instructions and access for how to make the lighted outdoor tree. Plus there were refreshments. {I told you you’d see what the lumber section looks like when taken over by a workshop!}
Soon lots of attendees started arriving, so we handed out pre-cut trees and everyone got to work. There’s a quick welcome to everyone and instructions on what to do. We even give away gift cards!
This was the really exciting part, talking with attendees and helping them learn how to use the drill and figuring out the best way to light their trees. As a blogger, most of what I do is online, so I love being able to connect with people in person and talk DIY.
Since there were so many people we took turns making sure everyone had what they needed to make the best tree and have the best time. I heard from quite a few people that they had a lot of fun and learned something new. There are many seasoned workshop attendees, but also couples and friends who signed up to attend their first workshop ever.
I even got to bring a tree home for myself, so now I have to decide how I’ll decorate it. I’m thinking maybe some faux snow on the branches with glitter of course. These two attendees made different looks for their trees. I love the natural feel without paint as much as the traditional green.

Well that just looks like a WHOLE lot of fun!!
Hi Scottie,
It was! Lots of people and lots of DIY going on. I’m glad people got to learn new things.
I wish I lived near you! I signed up for this workshop at my local store and they were not great like your store. They were not prepared and really did not want to do the workshop. After much back and forth between employees, they told me it was an instructional workshop and not a make and take. I contacted HD corporate and found out that your store is going above and beyond the norm. I am only writing this so that your other followers are not disappointed if their local store is not as accommodating as yours. Lyn is something special and I wish she would rub off on other store managers!
Hi Laura,
Thanks for the info. Yes, that local store did do a lot for the workshop. I wish you had a better experience. Maybe you can try another store in the future.
Thanks for leaving a note!
