We're closing in on the show house opening in about a week and a half…
How to Make House Plants Look Pretty
I realized sometime this year that I don’t have many house plants in my life and I want more. I always see beautiful pictures of all colors and shapes and realize this little bit of nature is what my home is missing. I mentioned this to my mom the other week and she was lovely enough to divide up one of hers and give me a little part.
She is a brave woman for I am known to kill house plants. I can landscape the whole backyard but I can barely keep house plants alive. So sad 🙁
The one she gave me is called Mother in Law’s Tongue. I like it because it’s a fun shade of green and the shape is nice and simple.
I’ve planted it in my new white pot from Ikea and it’s made a nice home for itself in my office on the glossy blue dresser. ~ Total spoiler on the new custom curtains if you are looking in the background you sneaky!
But look closer. All that shiny white-ness of the pot, nice green leaves and then…. dirt.
Meh, not so fun right?
Come closer and I will tell you my secret to pretty house plants.River rocks! Accent stones, pebbles, whatever you want to call them. They work wonders!
You can get these at the dollar store of all places, how great is that? I have seen them at the craft stores too, but dollar store = cheapest.Just a little bag will do you. Open it up and dump them {carefully} on the dirt. It will cover the dirt right up and keep the soil moist.
Not to mention look cute and modern.
What do you think? Will you put some rocks in your plants?
P.S. That pic with the text is my first shot at PicMonkey, pretty good right? I made that just for y’all to Pin 🙂 I’m in the market for a new photo editing software. Any suggestions?

Love that idea! I hadn’t thought of putting rocks on top of soil before. I have a terribly black thumb but I hope to work on that and keep some plants alive.
you know, that’s a great idea! i just bought a mega size yucca from ikea that i hope i can keep alive!
YES! Yes, I will use river rocks … actually, I’ve used small pieces of coral because it’s what we’ve got done here. Use your local resources, right?!?!
Who would’ve thought to use river rocks? That’s why I read your blog! 🙂 The plant / presentation looks so much better… Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the ideas for really dressing up the house plants. It is surprising how good a small bag of accent stones can make things look.
If I don’t wash the rocks off first(I bought from home depot) will I kill my bamboo plants? (Jodi)
Hi Jodi,
I’m not sure, but it might be good to wash them first. You can always take them off and do that. I’m sure the plant will be fine!
It’s actually recommended to place a top dressing across the dirt of a potted houseplant. It not only looks pretty, but the pebbles keep the soil moist and hold down little gnats from laying eggs in your dirt and breeding. There are all sort of top dressings from colored sand, to crushed coral, and colored pebbles. My current favorite is a top dressing of little white stones, looks so modern.
