How to Paint Chevron

This year I’m working on bringing more color and pattern to my life. I’m very much a solid kind of girl, even in my wardrobe. But with a new year comes new thoughts right? So I’m expanding my color horizons and embracing some of the bright, pretty designs that are out.

I made this goal come true the other week when I painted chevron on the side tables in my living room. Since we finally got furniture, now is my chance to bring some style into the room, so I started with paint.

The end tables I painted were a project I did a long time ago. The came home like this and as you can see I got them for $10 each.

The Tables

The tops of the tables looked like this. In need of serious help.

The table tops

After sanding, staining in ebony and some coats of poly, I had this. My side table how to is here.

To cover the top I cut a piece of art paper and had glass cut to fit. This was a temporary solution but I did end up decorating it sometimes for the holidays with place mats and such.

While I was testing paint for the side foyer I thought it would be a good idea to use some of that blue paint on the tables and bring in some pattern too. So I figured out just how to do this on my table tops.
First I painted them in a light gray which I had from a sample to be the base color.
Then I made a chevron stripe of poster board. I did this by measuring the table top, which is 18 inches square. I figured with 3 stripes on the table the “height” of the stripe could be three inches. That would leave enough space in between for the base color to come through.

To make the stripe I measured three inches high and 18 inches wide. Then to make the “V”s I just measured in the center of the stripe then in the center of that half again. After that I connected the lines. The width of the stripe was the width of my ruler. Nothing fancy, but you could make it however wide you wanted.

Chevron Template

You can see some of points of my stripe “points” were off the template, I just cut pieces of poster board to make these ends. Once I had that done I traced the stripes onto my table top.

I ended up putting on five stripes because I had enough space. I originally thought I was going to make three stripes but it didn’t seem like enough so I traced more with my pencil.

Then I hand painted the stripes with my blue paint sample. I put on two coats, put the pre-cut glass back on top and this is what I ended up with.

I’m loving how they look in the living room with my blue pillows.

Now that I have a template I may use it some place else too. Let me know if I can answer any questions about this for you. I hope it helps you bring some color and pattern into your life also šŸ™‚
