Did you ever have a season of life where things were just too busy and your home got neglected?
Like after starting a new job, moving, or a busy season with your kids?
When we got into our home a few years back we did lots of project but once we had our two children, all of that makeover and decorating progress came to a halt. But we are back into a good schedule and I’ve realize my home is in need of a little attention in the decorating department.
Here are tips on how to update your home decor when you want a new look, better storage, or just need a change in your home.
Go Gray with Color
Gray walls and decor have been a switch from traditional tan and beige colors for several years now. Grey doesn’t have to be boring! It’s fresh and neutral and you can add all kinds of accent colors and textures with a gray room.
Whenever anyone asks me to help them pick out colors, I always tell them to use their favorite shade of gray. It works for kitchens, kids rooms, the living room and more. Gray can be light, dark, and have several different undertone colors in it too.
This is our living room makeover in a medium shade (Gotham Gray by Behr Paint from Home Depot). Our kitchen, basement bathroom, dining room, and some other accent spaces are gray too. I can’t stop with the gray paint!

See all of our home’s paint colors here. There’s a fee printable on that page (or in the form below) where you can keep track of your home’s paint colors too.
Add More Storage
The easiest and fastest way to clean up your home and create a clutter-free look is to add creative storage. You can hide everyday items right in plain sight with baskets, ladders, and shelves. Like this ladder in our living room that holds blankets. Find a similar one here.

We have baskets in every room. They are perfect for just tossing items in when you want to clean up in a hurry and now they have ones big enough to hold blankets, pillows, and other items that don’t fit into other places.
Very exciting news for decor lovers – The Home Depot now has an entire line of home decor items including furniture, wall art, storage, bedding, wall paper and other items to make renovation and decoration a breeze. See them all here.
Here are some basket and storage options you can get while you are ordering supplies online from The Home Depot.
This makes it so convenient to plan a full or mini makeover in your home and get all the decor items to finish a space. Look at these pretty storage pieces.

Give Your Home Life
I’m into fake plants these days.
I admit I have a black thumb! I can’t even keep the most basic plants alive, which is why I am perfectly okay with grabbing some fake ones to add greenery and life to my spaces.
Next on my list to get is a fake fiddle leaf fig tree. These look so nice and require zero maintenance. If you don’t have may plants at home, consider getting some tall trees, iris plants, or larger floor plants you can use to add vibrancy to your rooms. Here are some of my favorite faux greens.

This is an iris I made in an old trophy. I love the color and size of it. You can make your own fake arrangements with a little creativity and supplies from the craft store.

Change Up Your Wall Art
Walls can be hard to decorate but there are lots of ways to change things out and give walls a new life. If you’ve ever looked at your walls and wanted to hang up some new things, here are some ideas that won’t cost a fortune but still look good.
Think tapestries, weavings, large abstract art, mirrors, or rustic signs. Go with what your style is and definitely go bigger than you usually would. Most people choose wall art that is to small for the space. If it looks awkward, it’s probably because it’s too small or hung too high ( or both).
Here are some wall art ideas to grab at The Home Depot online. Search by room, style, or color. I love all of these new home decor items available at Home Depot. We shop there for all our project items, now I can pop online to add the finishing touches too!
Do you like to shop online? I find it to be a big time saver! And you can get exactly what you want because of the great search options.

The new Home Depot home decor collection has products from KitchenAid like blends, toasters and other housewares you can now get from them and The Company Store, which I like.

Items You Can Find in the new Home Depot decor line:
Small appliances (Coffee makers, pressure cookers, blenders)
Plus they have The Home Decorator’s Collection. This is where our bathroom vanity is from. It fits perfects in the small bathroom and I like the drawers for function.

Does this give you some ideas of what to shop for to update your home decor? Which of these tips will you use in your own home?

Very interesting to read this article. Thanks for introducing those products. Actually, I have a plan to update my home interior.
HELP! I have all honey oak trim! I also have a huge living room with one wall and one half wall with honey maple wainscotting/beadboarding. My husband insist that we leave the trim. OK– how do we choose colors for the walls and the beadboarding? the same shade as the wall- lighter? darker? HELP We are going to remove cream carpet and put in luxary wide plank vinal…… HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
Hi,
For choosing paint, I suggest getting small jars to test out the colors. If your trim has yellow undertones you probably don’t want that in a paint color. I don’t think I’d paint things the same color, it might not look good. You can also paint bead board, but you have to use oil-based primer and paint, or it won’t stick to the bead board. I could see a very light gray on the walls with dark gray flooring. Good luck with your makeover!
