New Grasscloth Wallpaper in Foyer
Remember a few weeks back when I was itching to do something new to our foyer? And then I asked you all where I should paint an accent wall? My project senses were telling me to do something new downstairs, either in the foyer or living room, or somewhere! Paint, wallpaper, new rugs, something. In the middle of holiday decorating, OK before holiday decorating, I decided to put up wallpaper. Crazy? Maybe. Since I definitely had enough to do to prepare for my holiday home tour, but it was a project I had in the back of my mind and I couldn’t wait to get started on it.
I put up grasscloth!
A few months back we went up to Canada for a weekend and came across a cute little shopping district with a giant wallpaper store in it. On the clearance rack I spotted a double roll of a tan grass cloth for only $15. Since we put up grasscloth in our dining room, I knew that was the deal of the century because we paid about $80 a double roll retail.
It was such a bargain, and even though I had no idea what I was going to do with it at the time {who are we kidding, I knew EXACTLY what I was going to do with it}, I grabbed it, handed in my $15 of Canadian cash and went home a happy girl.
If you were looking carefully in the background of the holiday tour pics, you already saw this paper up in the foyer.
To get really excited about this update through I have to show you what the space looked like before it went up. This is our front foyer, where you come into the front of the house. It has our famous fireplace and is a perfect little space, even if we don’t use it much. The paint on the walls is Creamy Mushroom by Behr.
That’s our homasote bulletin board on the left wall, which frequently goes empty. I need some bulletin board inspiration apparently.
When we moved in the color worked for a bit, but I’ve been pretty bored with it for a long time. And I’ve tried to love it, considering it’s all over the living room and stairway also.
But that back wall where the sunburst mirror is and the little triangle shaped wall under the stairs were taunting me. I think they are the perfect walls to create some visual interest, whether it was going to be paint or wallpaper or something fun. Although you all pretty much voted for an accent color on the fireplace {which is still a possibility}, I though I’d start with this wall since I got that bargain on the paper and was just itching to make something happen.
If you follow me on Instagram, you know I posted this doozy one exciting Friday night. DIY, that’s how we do things around here in our free time. And then this update the next morning. Even if that $15 bargain did cause a hot mess in the foyer, I was all for a $15 hot mess that was going to cover my boring beige walls.
Yep I just got my wallpaper on one night and started measuring. If you look at that wall it’s a little complicated with the small part up to the hallway and the angle at the bottom. Turns out this was a two person job and so I enlisted the help of the hubs. We got that back wall up in just about an hour and I did this small triangle part the next morning.
And now you can clearly see the dust our old wooden floors attract!
Turns out the stuff we cut off the bottom of the long pieces on the bigger wall fit perfectly in the triangle part here because of the angle of the stairs. Easy!
The way I put up wallpaper is to measure twice, think about how I’m going to cut it, measure again, think again, and then cut it. Especially a job like this where I was marking on the back of the paper, but it was going to be reversed when I put it up.
But it went really quickly and since we had leftover wallpaper paste from the dining room, this only cost me $15. That is a decorating budget anyone can handle. Here is that small wall part before and after. I love the richness it brings to the space.
What do you think? I don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner. I always love when I add something to the walls and it just looks so much better!
This was just before I started decorating for the holidays. So now we have this woodsy look going on. I think the tan color works perfect with our woodwork. Although it’s kind of a rustic vibe, I’ll probably bring some more white in to brighten things up. Although I do love my silver and glass console table and vintage suitcases. They were my grandpa’s and we store games in them.
Now finally my accent wall needing heart can rest a little while. What do you think of the grasscloth? Have you ever put up wallpaper in your home? I really love it. Especially the layer it brings to a space. I’d wallpaper more around here, but the funny thing is all of our walls are painted-over wallpaper. Yep. Old house secret I guess!
That big back wall has wallpaper, then paint, and now this wallpaper. That small wall below the stairs was stripped of its wallpaper just shortly after we moved in. Only because I went to pull on a corner and most of it came off!
Now, about that fireplace…

Love the look of grasscloth and you did an amazing job applying it to your wall!
Looks awesome!
