Hello friends and happy 2013. I hope the new year has been good to you.…
How to Organize Christmas Ornaments
Over the past few months I picked up bunches of holiday ornaments to use in my decorating and craft projects. Ornaments of all sizes and colors. They worked great for decking the halls, but when I went to put them away I had a hot mess on my hands. Ornaments all over and no way to corral them. Then I realized the most simple way to get them under control. Here is how to organize Christmas ornaments for under $2.00 and in less than 10 minutes. You won’t believe how easy it is.
I don’t know about you, but the ornaments I have are all sizes, from tiny to large. I thought about getting some of those organizer boxes they sell for ornaments, but 1. I didn’t feel like spending the money and 2. I didn’t know where to specifically go to find them.
See, all kinds of sizes. Most of these I’ve acquired thrifted so I could use them for wreaths, garland, the white tree of my dreams that I’ve yet to own…
But when it came time to put them back home in the attic, I was faced with assorted boxed, tubes and bags.
Should I box some or bag them? Should I leave them as is how they came? Should I try to find a large storage container to fit all the containers they came in? Too many questions for this woman-on-a-mission-to-clean-up-after-Christmas.
So I went to the kitchen. And there I found the most simple answer to my ornament organizing problem. Baggies!
Not just any baggies, the large gallon sized with the zip closure. So my ornaments would be sure not to escape once I had them all put away.
So I got to bagging. Green in one bag, blue in another, silver in a third. I ended up organizing by color, that is how I like to do my decorating. So then next year when I pull them out, I’ll know exactly how my ornament stash is measuring up.
And it only took me about 1o minutes, not counting the time I needed to collect them from all over the house.
Soon enough I was faced with a few neatly lined up ornaments in baggies.
And the jumble of boxes, tubes, and bags will go to the recycling container. I’m glad to be rid of those!
Easy, cheap and quick! Glad I thought of this. Next I put them in a large storage tote and they all fit perfectly. The collection of other containers they came in would definitely not have. Christmas ornament organizing is done!
Have you come up with any easy holiday organizing solutions?

Great tips, thanks Jessica! I sort my holiday decorations as I put away too, it makes next year’s decorating so much easier when it’s already organized!
Jessica, I love how you organized your ornaments! Thanks so much for sharing and pinned! Have a happy Tuesday and a wonderful week!
Great idea! I need to organize my ornaments and this is an easy one. Thank you for sharing!
So simple and practical… why didn’t I think of that? Bravo!
I ask myself those questions every year. I finally started throwing away the packaging and using baggies too. Great tip!
Where were you the last 20 years girl? I needed this tip long ago. Shame on me…I have ALL of my ornaments in 1 bin and they are all on top of one another. I try to put delicate on top, etc. This sounds like a great idea to get them organized and not so loose. Thanks for the tip—pinning for next yr. cuz I’ll be damned if I’m going down there and doing it now lol 🙂
I agree with Julie. The beauty part is this is what I’m doing today so it came in handy. I just looked at all the empty ornament boxes in the garage and groaned. Now I’ll get out that new box of Baggies and be done with the boxes. Thank you so much for this one. It is great and I can mark the baggies for the ones I hang in our tree an the
ones I fill the punch bowl with etc. What a great idea.
I love this, Jessica!! I needed this a week ago and pinned as a reminder!! Have a great weekend! xo
Such a great tip! Pinning so I’ll have the info for next year.
I love the idea….. one questions though. Do you have glass ornaments mixed in there also? I feel like I have to keep my boxes so the glass ornaments are “cushioned”.
Hi Karen,
I do have glass ornaments in there. I just make sure I am careful with them! These bangs of ornaments will most likely end up on top of the storage box, so they are cushioned. Thanks for visiting my blog!
Hi there. When you store the ornaments, do you remove the hooks first? If so, is that pretty time consuming? Thanks!
Hi Cindy,
I did remove the hooks from ornaments that had them, but it was only very few since I only used one color on my tree and most of the others were displayed in bowls and such. But I wouldn’t see why you’d have to. Just toss them in the bags and they should be fine. Hope this helps!
Thank you, Thank you Any ideas about storing these dog-gone lights.
Hi,
You can always wrap the lights around a piece of cardboard and store them that way.
I have a question, I heard ornaments should breathe (or be separated) so there is no discoloration or breakage. I’d love to use the baggies since I priced ornament containers and they’re outrageous. Pls let me know. thanks
