How to Sew Christmas Stockings with Cuff
Thank you so much for all the sweet comments on my holiday home tour! Each year I wonder how I’m going to decorate my home differently than the year before, and each year it’s so easy. I always have fun decking the halls. Don’t forget to visit all the other homes on the tour through Friday, and enter the giveaway. This week I wanted to show you some of the projects you saw in my many pictures.
Since getting a sewing machine a few years ago for Christmas {best present ever}, I’ve loved making things for our home. And since I’m a thrifty girl, I’m always looking to use what I have and create on the cheap. After making a slipcover for the coffee table turned ottoman, I had a bit of the blue velvet fabric leftover and was dying to use it. So a holiday craft was born! Here is how to sew Christmas stockings.
Supplies You’ll Need
- Leftover fabric and trim (optional on the trim)
- Existing stocking to guide the shape (optional)
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Someplace fun to hang your stockings
How to Sew Christmas Stockings
To sew the actual stocking part, here is what you’ll do.
- Draw or trace the general shape of the stocking. It doesn’t matter which way to make the “foot”, but make sure you trace two so once sewn together they will make a front and back of the stocking.
- Like above, make sure you don’t trace both parts so you have the toe and heel parts made both of the wrong side of the fabric. You want one side facing the one way and one the other. Think carefully before you trace and cut them, I made one wrong and had to cut it over.
- Sew your stocking parts with right sides together. This blue velvet fabric was so thick, my sewing got a little wonky, but hey, it still works. Trim off the extra and turn it right side out.
How to Sew the Cuff
Some people sew a cuff of the same fabric, but I wanted a little different color for the trim so I choose a white fuzzy fabric I had. Again, this was all leftover, but you can definitely score all kinds of remnants at the fabric store on clearance. Or maybe make them out of tea towels or old clothes for sentimental reasons? The choice is yours.
- Cut out a piece of fabric that is twice as wide as the front of your stocking and however “high” you want the cuff. Experiment, you can get different stocking styles by doing this.
- Hem one edge of the fabric all the way down then sew together {right sides in} one short end so you have a loop.
- Insert the cuff into the stocking with the wrong side of the cuff fabric facing out and into the fabric, so it’s next to the wrong side of the stocking, and inside it. Make sense?
- Here is the wrong side of the cuff fabric inside against the wrong side of the stocking.
- Sew on the outside of the stocking, the cuff to the stocking. Then flip it over the right side of the stocking to show the cuff.
After you’ve sewn the cuff to the stocking you’ll have this. A holiday stocking, made just by you. See how thick it is in relation to the size of the stocking? You can definitely make it taller if you wanted.
To make a loop to hang the stocking, 1. Cut some of the same cuff fabric {mine was thin so I used it}, or cut a cute ribbon to size. 2. Simply sew it by hand to the inside of the stocking or pin it on and cheat like I did. Nobody will see it!
To enhance the look of the cuff you can add some trim to the cuff or something else festive. I added a line of fur trim I had just to the front of the stockings. Again, nobody will see the back. If you give these as gifts of hang them where you will see all sides, feel free to add it all the way around the stocking. I actually hot glued this onto my stockings since the fur is a little tricky to sew.
And there you have it, your own handmade Christmas stockings.
Now you’ll probably notice my stockings are not the perfect shape! In fact, they are a little wonky but I was working with that crazy thick velvet and only had so much of it. If I made these again I would definitely make them bigger. They are a bit smaller than other stockings we have.
The blue velvet fabric is so thick and is such a deep color, I love it as a holiday accent. I could see these as a cute gift for a hostess or your pedicurist? Plus you could personalize them with an initial or in someone’s favorite color.
Sometimes I hang these on the mantel or maybe one year I’ll try them on the stairs? I tend t move them around from place to place too.
You saw them Monday on my holiday home tour in the living room on the silver dresser I made over.
I loved making these, I actually might make some more! in a different fabric of course. Now I just have to pick one out.
Don’t forget today you can see how I made my pine cone garland over at Pretty Handy Girl. And the $500 e-gift card giveaway is still open all week. Enter here.

Thanks for linking up to our Last Minute Christmas Party! These stockings are so cute! Someday I’m going to do something like this. I’ve just got to get my husband and kiddos behind that idea;)
I’ve always wanted to make our stockings…. I LOVE yours. Thank you for the tutorial.
Your stockings turned out beautiful, what a gorgeous deep blue too!!
Thanks for such a wonderful gift idea! I’ve been trying to figure out what was missing in my daughter’s gift bags for her 2 teachers. I had planned to make 2 tote bags and stuffing them with markers and glue sticks (they said they are low on these) and add a cute coffee mug that I found. Now I’m going to add some homemade stockings! It’s going to be soooo sweet!!!!
Hi Maureen,
Glad I could help! You are so sweet, making gifts for the teachers. I hope they enjoy them and that you have a wonderful holiday season!
Jessica, you stockings came out so cute. And, I just love the navy blue.

Thanks Denyse! We used the blue on the ottoman, it’s this thick canvas-backed fabric and I just had to make something with the leftovers!
