Remember that weekend when Dan went out of town and I decided to have some…
Update on the Hex Tile Floor
Last week you got to see how crazy I can get over home improvement when I uncovered a hex tile floor in my bathroom.Yahoo!
That was after I decided to rip out old vinyl in a mini makeover of sorts.
Well, it’s not all roses and sunshine in the bathroom, we’ve hit a small snag. I Tweeted about it at 9:42 Tuesday night.
The snag is in the shape of a large crack in the center of the floor.
It’s more like two smaller cracks but it’s big enough to notice. At least now I {kind of} know why the tile was covered. It was to hide the broken tile.
It’s probably from the house settling at one point.ย The fireplace in my office is the same way.
So we’d have to chip out all of the damaged ones and replace them ๐ But I’m good about it.ย Thanks so much to Michelle for cheering me up in that depressing moment ๐
The good news is that they still make this kind of tile these days and we can get some replacements. Although I have to figure out if it is glazed or unglazed.
But I’m not discouraged,ย it’s still an amazing floor and I’m really excited about the difference it’s made in the room already. I finished scraping off most of the paper backing and adhesive the other day. The brownish residue you see is leftover paper and adhesive. I have to go over each tile and clean them all off completely. This is what the bathroom looks like at this very moment.
That’s my update!
In other news… our backyard is getting torn up as we speak, we’re getting a new hardscape. So many projects happening around here, it’s all very exciting.
Well that stinks but sounds like you can fix it, so that’s good. You do have a lot of projects going on right now, wow. Just finished the pantry this week, found my kitchen hardware on clearance at HD and trying to finish up E’s bedroom. Looking forward to seeing all your projects when they’re finished.
You are welcome! ๐
Such beautiful tile! I’m so glad you can repair the damaged tiles. A lot of work and elbow grease but it will be worth it. Good luck! I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I love the hex tile so cool you uncovered it!! We are thinking of going with hex tile in our bathroom, with grey grout. I love seeing how well its holding up!
So sad to see there’s a crack, but you’re right that there are options. My fingers are crossed for you! As for projects, I’m gearing up to tear out all the bedding plants and pots to prep for the fall and winter. So bummed, the darn deer have had a party out there, so everything is looking just plain done!
Even chipping out a few and replacing is way better than retiling the whole thing! Plus it’s original, which is amazing. I am super, duper, uber jealous.
Just finished scraping my daughter’s bathroom floor. Same thing happened to us… 80-year old hex tiles covered with ugly and nasty vinyl. We have a crack also, but it isn’t too bad… BUT… we have missing tiles around a floor vent and I need about 15 tiles to fill in that area. Any suggestions about how to find just a few of these vintage hex tiles? I found some marble ones that are the same diameter, but the depth of the tile is too deep.
Hi Jaymie,
We looked for matching tile for our floor and found some that might have worked at an architectural salvage store. Keep looking and try old house supply places online. This Old House magazine often has advertisements in the back for those websites. We ended up covering our floor because of the large cracks, but good luck with yours! – Jessica
Great work โฆ Iโm trying to replace parts of my floor as well with that same tile but canโt find anywhere. Where did you find it?
